The Benefits of Massage Therapy

Massage therapy has become an integral component to general health care, improving lives in today’s fast-paced, stress-filled world. Traditional healthcare systems are recognize the important role therapeutic massage plays in treating illness and chronic ailments, as well as contributing to a higher sense of general well-being and overall personal health.

With ever-expanding research on the beneficial effects of massage, many professionals are advising patients to include therapeutic massage in their personal health care treatment plans. Physicians, chiropractors and physiotherapists are recommending more patients receive massages for certain health conditions, while many employers and health insurance plans support the use of registered massage therapists.

How to Prepare & What to Expect

HOW TO PREPARE FOR TABLE MASSAGE

Before your appointment, it is helpful to not consume a large meal or any stimulants such as caffeine or sugar. Showering before your session can prepare your body for maximum benefit by loosening tense muscles. Please make sure to silence your cell phone so that your session is not interrupted.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your therapist may ask questions regarding your medical history, physical condition and any problem areas that you would like her to focus on during your session. You will then be left alone in the private massage therapy room so that you may disrobe to the level that you are comfortable with and lay on the table, draping the sheets provided over yourself.

The only area of your body that will be uncovered during your session will be the area being worked on at that time.  A full body session generally includes the neck, shoulders, arms, hands, fingers, upper and lower back, legs (including areas of the inner thigh), feet, toes, face (including the ears, nose, and around the eyes and mouth) and scalp.

If there are any areas you would prefer not to include, or if anything such as room temperature, lighting, etc. distract from your comfort level, please let your therapist know. If you experience any pain, discomfort or uneasiness, please let your therapist know this as well. It is also helpful to inform your therapist of techniques or areas you find enjoyable or helpful so that she can include more time focusing on these areas during future sessions.

As your session begins, close your eyes, try to relax, and please resist engaging in any conversation other than providing feedback to your therapist so that she can make your session more enjoyable.

Many people fall asleep during their session.  Others experience emotional release, such as joy, sadness, anger, even tears.  Do not be alarmed.  Allow yourself to express these emotions by laughing or crying, or to take a nap as needed. Your therapist will gently wake you when your session is completed.

Please note that any illicit or sexually suggestive remarks or advances will result in an immediate termination of your session.

After the massage, you may want to drink extra water for the next 24 hours to help flush out toxins released by your session.

Be sure to ask your therapist any questions you may have about massage therapy or your session in particular.
